Setup Color Tab

The Colors Tab of the Setup Window contains the facility to change the color of various aspects of the radar map and aircraft label display.

Any changes to color values will be saved and retained for the next time the simulator is run. If however, the simulator version is upgraded, then default values will be restored.

At any time default values may be restored by clicking on the Default button.

The map and track elements affected by color changes will depend on the radar system in use. The following table is a summary.

Display Tab

Setup Color Tab

The Display Tab of the Setup Window contains the facility to change various settings associated with the radar display or track labels. Access to some of these settings may be disabled depending on the radar system in use.

Any changes to display settings values will be saved and retained for the next time the simulator is run. If however, the simulator version is upgraded, then default values will be restored.

The following table is a summary of the display settings available:

Color Setting

Function

Extended Label

Allows the display of extra information in the track label

Shared Label

Enables the extended label information to be cycled for display

Callsign Text

Enables/disables the Callsign Text feature, which display the phonetic phrasing of the aircraft telephony

Frame Label

When selected, makes use of a label frame with which moving the label is done in a two click process. When disabled the label is moved with a dragging motion when the right mouse button is pressed.

Display Speed Information

Allows the display of current speed information for an aircraft for training purposes.

Auto Deconflict Labels

When enabled, the radar system will automatically move labels so that they are not obscured by other labels.

Conflict Alerts

Enables or disables the display of Conflict Alerts.

Route Alerts

Enables or disables the display of Route Alerts.

Level Alerts

Enables or disables the display of Cleared Level Alerts.

Scale Marker Main/Secondary

Enables of disables the display of the Scale Marker on the main and secondary radar windows.

Magnetic Alignment

Toggles between alignment of the radar map between Magnetic North and True North.

Screen Centre Marker

Enables and disables the display of the Screen Centre Marker.

Swap Mouse Buttons

Supports the facility to swap the mouse buttons to emulate different radar systems.

Mouse Zooming

Enables and disables the availability of the Mouse Zoom function.

Aspect Ratio

This dropdown menu allows the selection of the Aspect Ratio to which the computer monitor is set. It is essential that this value be set correctly so that radar display presents distances equally in all directions.

Rotation

This textbox allows a one-time Map Rotation of the airspace for training purposes. The value entered must be between zero and 360 and must be completed prior to starting the exercise.

Range Rings Main

Toggles display of selected Range Rings on the main radar window.

Range Rings Second

Toggles display of selected Range Rings on the second radar window. (jurisdiction) aircraft

Primary Rings Selection (10NM or 20Km)

The checkbox enables/disables display of the Primary Range Rings. The two dropdown entries are settings for the minimum and maximum radii for displayed rings.

Offset Rings Selection (5NM or 10Km)

The checkbox enables/disables display of the Offset (dotted) Range Rings. The two dropdown entries are settings for the minimum and maximum radii for displayed rings.(jurisdiction) aircraft

J Rings(10NM or 20Km)

The checkbox enables/disables the selection and display of J-Rings (Halos). The dropdown entries are settings for the selection of a new J-Ring. Values are in Nautical Miles or Kilometers.

Zoom Double Click

If this checkbox is selected, then the Mouse Zoom function is initiated by a double right-click. This will prevent inadvertent activation of the function.

Speech Tab

Setup Window Speech Tab

This tab contains options for Speech Recognition and Synthesis.

The following table summarises the settings:

Speech Setting

Function

Mouse Click Control

Enables or disables the Mouse Click Control function, a method for controlling aircraft without Speech Recognition.

Speech Synthesis

Enables or disables whether Speech Synthesis is used This would normally always be selected.

Nonstd Utterances

Enables/disables the Non-standard Utterances function, which adds extra non-ICAO utterances to aircraft transmission for realism.

PTT Clear Lockups

Enables/disables the PTT Clear Lockups function, a means of eliminating Speech Synthesis related lockups.

PTT Mute Radio

When selected, pressing the PTT key will mute any radio call being made. Click here for details.

Auto Radio Off

Allows the Speech Recognition to time out after the PTT is released. Click for more details.

Radio Always On

When Radio Always On is enabled, the Speech Recognition will work independently of the PTT usage.

Emulate SR

Exercise Tab

Exercise Tab of Setup Window

This tab contains some general options for varying simulator exercises. In general, settings on this tab are not saved as they are exercise-specific. That is, the next time the VV Simulator is run the settings will revert to default.

Settings include:

  • Exercise Speed: The clock speed of the exercise may be varied here. The F11 and F12 keys may also be used to set the clock speed to 1.0x and 2.0x respectively.
  • Wind Settings: Where the exercise allows, the wind may be changed here. Direction, speed and variability of the wind is settable here.
  • User Settings: When the simulator is deployed online, the user name, email address and IP address are recorded here. It is important that the Deployed User Name and the Speech User Name refer to the same person. Performance data will be recorded and attributed to the Deployed user.
