Hong Kong CAD: Building Skills for a Complex Environment

With VV Approach we are giving new and existing controllers the practice they need to prepare for a training challenge.

The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) is responsible for managing airspace over Hong Kong and the South China Sea. HKCAD started using VV Approach in 2012, initially for ab initio students. Most lately the product has been implemented in pre-training of rated controllers from Tower and Area to work on the Hong Kong Approach position. This is a challenging operational environment due to the high traffic levels, airspace constraints and proximity of Guangzhou and Macau airports. The use of VV Approach is seen as advantageous in the development of scanning, workload management, phraseology and sequencing skills.

HKCAD were our first customer and have used the software on standalone PCs, through on-site delivery and, as of 2023, through the Control Zone, our cloud based Learning Management System. We, at Visual Vectoring, owe a great debt of gratitude to the pioneering vision of Phillip Lee and more recently the stewardship of Ken Lam – a graduate of VV Approach. We look forward to meeting the training needs of HKCAD for many years to come.
