Overview

VVEnroute™ is an Air Traffic Control trainer that provides foundational skills development in Enroute/Area surveillance control. It is suitable for use by ab initio or conversion ATC students at the commencement of their surveillance training, or as part of a generalist aviation qualification.

Learning Outcomes

VVEnroute™ teaches the practical ability to confidently manage a range of complex and realistic traffic scenarios in a Surveillance Enroute/Area Control environment. In particular, the final simulation exercises require the student to process and de-conflict multiple crossing aircraft and sequence them to four gates simultaneously. The course presents a very realistic simulation of high-density Enroute/Area traffic and is an ideal preparation for formal ATC training.

Course Structure

The basic skills required in surveillance control are presented using structured training, and perfected with unlimited simulation practice. The course is divided into six modules, presented on three different learning platforms, MAZE, GRID and DIAMOND:

Contains content on general ATC concepts, airspace, vectoring, interface usage and basic altimetry. This provides the a general theoretical basis for the simulation that follows.

Covers the required skills to vector aircraft to remain within airspace structures of varying complexity and to separate them with other traffic. The judgment, timing and issuance of vector instructions is introduced and reinforced with increasingly complex simulation.

Teaches the processing of cruising traffic through a generic ATC sector, including acceptance and handling-off of aircraft. The primary learning outcome is vectoring for separation of crossing traffic without recourse to vertical separation.

The spacing of sets of aircraft on the same route through a geographical location is introduced. Emphasis is placed on the recognition of visual cues to inform a control plan for the required sequencing outcomes.

Sequencing skills are extended for the processing of sets of aircraft on different tracks inbound to common geographical location. This presents an extra challenge to traffic visualisation and management in preparation for more complex scenarios.

Techniques taught in previous modules are integrated in scenarios requiring crossing traffic to be separated and sequenced through four exit gates simultaneously. A high level of traffic projection and planning is required, as well as strong skills in interface management, decision-making and phraseology.
